REVIEW OF THE FIRST EDITION
Those who have read and enjoyed the "Tarzan"
stories will find in this tale more entertainment
of a similar sort, but with the thrills intensified
to the nth degree. The scene of the story
is laid on the inner surface of the earth's
crust, where prehistoric monsters roam at
large and where time is not. The opportunities
for hair-raising adventure in such surroundings
are limited only by the author's imagination,
and this, in the case of Mr. Burroughs, is
almost equivalent to saying that there is
no limit.
How an aged American inventor and his young
friend, who is the hero of the tale, reach
the interior of the earth is marvelous enough
in itself, but that adventure pales into
insignificance compared with the things that
happen to these two after they reach the
world within a world. They find human beings
there, too, some of them equal, if not superior,
to those of the outer world in physical development,
but not so well equipped mentally, else how
could the hero make for himself an honored
place among them? But these human beings
live in constant terror of a race of highly
intelligent creatures whose very appearance
is enough to chill the blood of the most
courageous.
Running through the book is a tender little
love story complicated by the inevitable
misunderstandings without which novelists
would be hard put to it to earn their daily
bread. The hero is obliged to save the fair
lady's life no less than three times before
he wins her love. And rescuing a maiden from
the perils that abound in the interior of
our globe is no child's play. It requires
a strong arm, a stout heart, a nimble brain
and some help from the author.
The villain of the piece is sufficiently
despicable to meet all requirements. His
final act of treachery is so contemptible
that the reader can only hope that he will
get his just reward in the sequel, for it
can scarcely be doubted that Mr. Burroughs
will find some way to give us at least one
more volume of the adventures of David Innes.
There is yet much unexplored territory on
the inner side of the earth's crust, and
it is impossible to believe that the author
will neglect the opportunity to tell more
tales of the strange things that happen there.
It is an ingenious yarn that Mr. Burroughs
spins and one that will hold the reader's
interest to the very end. But as one lays
the book down a grave question arises: How
are they ever going to do it in the movies?
